Hornbill Festival – Experience an Indian Tribal Festival

This holiday is limited to 16 guests only. We will be travelling to some remote areas of India and this little adventure may be more suited to seasoned travellers. We will be travelling far off the beaten track, with little if any tourist facilities. Hence, some of the accommodation, whilst it will be the best there is available, will be quite basic.  We have a wonderful local guide who will share all his knowledge about the culture of Nagaland.

Highlights of the Tour:

Need to know more…

Hornbill festival

The Hornbill Festival of Nagaland is one of the biggest cultural extravaganzas in the North East. It is a week-long event held every year in Nagaland. The Hornbill Festival is a festival to revive, protect, sustain, and promote the richness of the Naga heritage and traditions. During the Hornbill Festival, all the Naga tribes come together to showcase their age-old traditions and come closer to knowing each other. The main events of the festival take place at the Naga Heritage Village, Kisama which is about 10kms from Kohima, the capital city of Nagaland. Traditional Naga huts and Morungs (boy’s dormitories) typical to each of the Naga tribes are built and erected in a way that closely resembles their traditional euphoria on a small hillock in Kisama. The place itself is scenic and mystical, and the festival is simply epic!

The Hornbill Festival celebrations are marked with a colorful display of traditional dances, sports, and songs of the various Naga tribes. Cultural dances, indigenous sports, and folk songs are the main highlights of the first 3 days of the festival. The warrior log drums, the colourful headgear, the soulful war cry, the exquisite costumes et al are simply remarkable in their own ways. Delicious local cuisines and delicacies that are typical to each of the Naga tribes are served in their respective Morungs along with the finest rice beer.

The Hornbill Festival of Nagaland, is one of the biggest cultural events for all the 8 Northeast States. Various contests and events are organised during this festival. The Kohima Night Bazaar is also an interesting aspect of the Hornbill Festival. The stretch of the Kohima Main town comes alive for 7 nights with food, music, and fun. The street is overcrowded with various food stalls serving out some of the finest delicacies and it’s simply amazing walking through the hustle-bustle.

Kantha Embroidery

Kantha embroidery This traditional kantha workshop is an opportunity to learn the traditional kantha techniques which informed the more modern, mass-produced West Bengali kantha techniques that have become so popular worldwide recently. The opportunity to learn this ancient textile art from practitioners who have learned it from their mothers, grandmothers and a line of women going back into antiquity is not to be missed! As sarees, dhotis and even bedding become torn or too worn to use, they are layered together, and yarn or cordage salvage form other pieces are threaded between the layers, binding them together in a unique ‘crinkly’ manner. This Kantha stitching is used to decorate the new textile pieces with large, repeating motifs of various kinds

Block Printing

block-printed-designsIndia has long been famous for its continuing wooden block printing tradition. The ‘blocks’ are a hand-carved stamp which is dipped in dye and applied, again and again, to a silk, cotton or linen fabric to make a pattern. It can be very simple or extremely ornate, depending on the tastes and the exact tradition of the artisan.

This is an excellent opportunity for you to learn the technique from traditional craftspeople, and make it a part of your own work.

Silk n Dye Festival

Assam is famous for indigenous wild silk which is lustrous, smooth, with affinity for dyes. Silk n Dye Festival is a wonderful event that takes place every year to give silk weavers of the region a platform to showcase their products and introduce an age old tradition of silk farming and natural dyeing to the world. You will learn and witness the silk process from the silk worm in to the handwoven stunning fabrics you see today. Silk is the strongest natural fibre obtained from the cocoons of silk moths, it is then hand reeled to  yarn and dyed. Traditionally, yarns were dyed with flowers, leaves, roots, seeds and other natural elements of colour. Over the past few years environment concerns have increased the demand for naturally dyed products. This festival isn’t restricted to silk weavers, many different types of weavers and craftsmen come from afar to display their products. The festival will also showcase other artisans of handicraft and handloom giving you insight into local traditions and craft culture. Guests will be able to buy craft directly from them. There will also be lots of live entertainment with folk dances and music every evening.

Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve

Colouricious-holidays-jeep-safariAll those who have thought Indian one-horned rhinoceros only existed in Jurassic-era, then a trip to Kaziranga is a must for them. One of the most sought after wildlife holiday destinations in India, Kaziranga National park’s 430 square kilometer area sprinkled with elephant-grass meadows, swampy lagoons, and dense forests is home to more than 2200 Indian one-horned rhinoceros, approximately 2/3rd of their total world population.

Along with the iconic Greater one-horned rhinoceros, the park is the breeding ground of elephants, wild water buffalo, and swamp deer. Over the time, the tiger population has also increased in Kaziranga, and that’s the reason why Kaziranga was declared as Tiger Reserve in 2006. Also, the park is recognized as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International for the conservation of avifaunal species. Birds like lesser white-fronted goose, ferruginous duck, Baer’s pochard duck and lesser adjutant, greater adjutant, black-necked stork, and Asian Openbill stork specially migrate from the Central Asia during the winter season.

Undoubtedly, the park is known for its good population of animals but more than that its the wildlife conservation initiatives that take place in the park are more popular. With its amazing wildlife conservation activities, the park has successfully managed to grow the population of Greater one-horned rhinoceros, an endangered species.

The vast expanse of tall elephant grass, marshland, and dense tropical moist broadleaf forests undoubtedly makes the park look beautiful but it’s the presence of Brahmaputra river, which makes it look enigmatic.

There is so much of India to explore! We also offer different craft and textile tours across this beautiful country. Take a look at the other wonderful destinations we also offer such as Uzbekistan, West Bengal and Bhutan or if you India!
