Textile Treasure Hunt of North India

Hosted by one of our Colouricious Representatives

Indian textiles can be rightly termed as a combination of the social structure of India. India is extremely famous for its rich and diverse textile tradition. India gives you the opportunity to feel the rich weave of its textile, which showcases India as a land of mystique and wisdom. The north region of India is extremely rich in its culture and traditions that have a very ancient history.

Highlights of the Tour:

Need to know more…

Surajkund International Crafts Fair

The Surajkund Fair attracts craftspersons, buyers and tourists from all over the world to the Faridbad District every year, for the first two weeks of February. This fair (or ‘mela’) provides a showcase for some of the country’s finest traditional and modern craftspeople, and produces some of the world’s most celebrated traditional cultural fabrics and handicrafts. It is easily the largest crafts fair in the world.

Sarai Mohanna village

Sarai Mohanna is a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi District, most famous for its silk weaving tradition. The Banarasi saris made here are considered to be among the finest and most desirable in India. Such a traditionally hand crafted sari can take as much as 6 months to create.

Chikan Embroidery workshop

Chikan literally translates as ‘embroidery’. It is a style that developed in Lucknow, and the village of Chowk in that region produces a great deal of it. It involves white thread embroidered onto pastel-tined muslin and cotton garments.

Slightly ‘modernised’ versions of the Lucknawi chican style include coloured thread, bead, mirror work, and other embellishments adopted from related traditions. The base fabric palette has also been expanded to include chiffons, silks and other light, soft materials.

Ganga Aarti ceremony

The Ganga (or Ganges) river is sacred to Hindus, and flows through many of India’s largest and most important cities. The Ganga Aarti ceremony involves the offering of fire to the river in the form of floating flower-laden lanterns.

The version of this ceremony that takes place in Dasawamedh Ghat is quite different from those celebrated in Rishikesh and Haridwar, and is truly a sight to behold.

La Martinière Lucknow Residency

LeMartini-Lucknow-Residency-craft-tour-arts-and-craftsLucknow is the capitol of Uttar Pradesh, and it boasts the prestigious La Martinière College among its wonders. The school is more than 150 years old, and is considered one of the best in India.

At the time of the Sepoy Rebellion, the boys of the La Martinière school, then called ‘Constantina’, took up arms in defence of the Residency, fighting alongside British Troops. The site of the siege of the Residency is a great draw for tourists to this day.

Heritage Walk of Chowk

One of the parts of the Treasure Hunt that our guests enjoy the most is the Heritage Walk of Chowk in Lucknow, and the chance to engage in some of the best shopping in the entire subcontinent. A guided walking tour of this amazing historical ad cultural centre is something no one should miss!

Old Delhi’s Cloth and Embellishment Market.

textiles-embroidered-indian-clothing-embroidered-shoesThe sprawling, ancient capital of Delhi boasts dozens (if not hundreds) of bustling, colourful markets. However, the most interesting for our purposes might be the Cloth and Embellishments Market just outside of Chandni Chowk. Here, fabrics, decorations and clothing are made for sale throughout India, and eventually exported all around the world. It is truly an experience not to be missed!

Morning visit to Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal in Agra is one of the world’s most famous buildings, and considered by many to be the epitome of Mughal architecture. Its name means ‘Crown of the Palace’, and it was constructed in the mid-1600s as a mausoleum for Mumtaz Mahal, the most favoured wife of the Mughal emperor.

It is, of course, also a UNESCO World Heritage site. The sight of the surrounding gardens in the morning sun is nothing less than inspiring!

Sanskriti Museum of Indian Textiles

The Sanskriti Museum grew from the private collection of a dedicated traditional textiles scholar, and has grown into a world renowned resource for studying the handicraft traditions that produced these wonders. As such, it attracts at least as many craftspersons and serious scholars as tourists every year.

Travel, learn, be happy!
