Pottery Village – Kerala, India
Pottery is one of the oldest crafts. It’s fascinating to see how it’s done and maybe also have a go.
Kerala, India, is home to many pottery artisans who pride themselves on their work. Many use the traditional wheel and their own hands to create these useful masterpieces. However, as history has it, these pieces used to be much more appreciated. Many would find the pieces at use. However, with modern day pressures such as new plastic cups, the fate of some of the artisans livelihood were at stake. People have opted for other materials when buying products aside from clay.
Then came the new era. The artists learnt how to create new and more useful (for the modern day) products. These included the likes of tiles, Landscaping products and murals. Using terracotta, they shape the material with their bare hands and effect the material with heating techniques.
In Kerala, India’s pottery village, you can still see the classic pottery work. You can witness the making of vases, cups and many more interesting items.
