Hornbill Festival – Nagaland
The Hornbill Festival is a massive celebration of Nagaland’s tribal culture. Being such a sacred and passionate experience, it is one you truly wouldn’t want to miss. Offering dancing, music and arts the December festival is a colourful experience. We, at Colouricious Holidays, love it! Not only do you get to enjoy the sun, entertainment and all round happy atmosphere, but you learn a lot about the tribes. You also get to meet people from all different walks of life. People you would never typically get to meet.
Each tribe really belongs to each other and have their own history and community. This really is a breath of fresh air and offers a different perspective to how we, in Britain, or the western world, live. Each of the 16 tribes attend the festival and each tribe has their own history and rules. The people who belong to the tribes have maintained their own livelihood for their whole life. They are usually friendly and hospitable to new people they meet offering servings of a drink.
Another fascinating thing about the tribes is that they have their own dances for different occasions. For example, war dances or bamboo dances. Their rituals are integral to their cultures and their rich and interesting history.
